Team USA Schedule / Tickets
For the seventh consecutive summer, the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) will compete at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park!
From June 27-29 and on July 4, the National Team will compete in a friendship series against an international opponent. Past teams from around the world that have visited the Triangle to face Team USA include Canada, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, and Russia. The July 4th game is the highlight of the ’09 schedule, as USA Baseball fans will be able to cheer on the Stars and Stripes and celebrate a national holiday all in one night. Two summers ago, the 2007 National Team – led by future MLB stars Pedro Alvarez, Justin Smoak and Brett Wallace – took on Japan on July 4th in front of a sellout DBAP crowd of 10,063, and an Alvarez solo home run in the first inning helped lead the U.S. to a 7-2 victory. As part of the festivities, the National Team wore camouflage jerseys in a salute to the U.S. Armed Forces.
Players who recently appeared at the DBAP while playing for the USA Baseball National Team include 2008 Olympians Stephen Strasburg, Taylor Teagarden, Matt LaPorta, Casey Weathers, and Jake Arrieta; #1 Overall Pick in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft David Price; 2006 Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year Alex Gordon; Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman; and NC State alum Joey Devine. Other notable USA Baseball alums with North Carolina ties include Jeremy Cummings (Durham Bulls), Evan Longoria (Durham Bulls), Carl Crawford (Durham Bulls), Scott Bankhead (UNC), Tyrell Godwin (UNC), B.J. Surhoff (UNC), Daniel Bard (UNC), and Andrew Brackman (N.C. State). Additional USA Baseball alumni include major league stars such as Todd Helton, Mark Prior, Mark Mulder, Chase Utley, Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter.
Last summer the DBAP also played host to the bronze medal-winning 2008 U.S. Olympic Baseball Team. Team USA took on Canada in games 2-4 of the four-game Road to Beijing tour played in Cary and Durham. The series was a pre-Olympic tune-up for both teams as they prepared for the competition in Beijing. The U.S. won all three games at the DBAP, and Triangle fans were able to send off current Bulls pitcher Cummings and prospects like Strasburg, LaPorta and Teagarden in style.
Headquartered at The Durham Bulls Athletic Park, USA Baseball is the National Governing Body for the sport and represents baseball in America as a member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the International Baseball Federation (IBAF). USA Baseball is the sole organization responsible for selecting, training and supporting the USA Baseball Professional Teams (U.S. Olympic Baseball Team, World Baseball Classic Team, World Cup Team), the USA Baseball National Team, the USA Baseball 18U, 16U and 14U National Teams, and the Women’s National Team. Additionally, since 1978 USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. The award is presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.
The organization’s fingerprint in the Triangle also extends to Cary, where the USA Baseball National Training Complex (NTC) is located. One of the country’s premiere baseball facilities, the NTC has held past and present USA Baseball events like the Road to Beijing pre-Olympic series, the Tournament of Stars presented by Major League Baseball (18U) and in 2008 it was the home stadium for the UNC-Chapel Hill Tar Heels Baseball Team, which finished the regular season with a consensus national #1 ranking.
